One of the things I like most about La Guindalera is its small size. Everyone knows each other and there is a really strong school community, as well as a great AMPA (parent association). This has also been positive for my children because there is a real sense of community inside and outside the classroom.
I have also been very happy with the student body at La Guindalera. My kids have grown up going to school with children from Spanish families, multicultural families, and families from many different countries around the world. This has probably been one of the most enriching experiences for them and has helped them to learn important lessons about tolerance, diversity, and religious pluralism.
In addition, I really like the school grounds. The Infantil or preschool building is a bit old, but it is completely separate from the primary school building and it has an enormous schoolyard with big trees, a sandy play area, and a school garden! So even though the preschool building is older, the schoolyard is wonderful. The primary school building is in really good condition as it was renovated about 13 years ago and it has two school yards, one smaller and one larger. There is a small recreation center, or polideportivo, next to the school that is often used for P.E. classes. The school does not have a proper gymnasium, but a large multi-purpose room in the primary school so it's nice that they can use the polideportivo.
In terms of teachers, I would say that my kids have had some awesome teachers and others who were not so great, but overall I would say that we have been happy. I know some people have mentioned that books are used in La Guindalera. It is not an alternative school like Waldorf or Montessori. So, books are used, but I have seen that good teachers are able to incorporate other activities and projects to enhance the learning experience. Of course, that totally depends on the teacher. I do have to add that I think that the school and the teachers do some interesting activities throughout the year.
Another thing I really like about the school is that parents are included in some of the activities, at least before the pandemic. There is a big Carnival parade and parents are invited to come and watch it and each class usually puts on a Christmas show that parents can attend. At the end of May, on a Saturday, there is usually a Spring Festival that the 6th grade parents are in charge of running. Every class usually acts in the festival with a dance, song, poetry reading etc., and children in after school activities sometimes do an exhibition. It is a really fun day for families to get together, have something to eat, and help the 6th graders raise money for their end of the year trip.
Overall, I would say that for my family La Guindalera has been a great school. I would recommend it and encourage you to go to Jornadas de Puertas Abiertas to get an idea of what the school is like.
